Burnaby driver's erratic maneuvers irk local residents

Apr 26 2025, 2:00 pm

A Burnaby driver entered the wrong lane near Metrotown before nearly hitting a cyclist when correcting their mistake.

Daily Hive obtained permission to share the video of the incident, which transpired on Eastbound Central Boulevard and Willingdon. The timestamp on the dashcam footage says the incident took place on Wednesday.

Video footage shows that as the dashcam driver approaches the intersection, a Mercedes SUV driver in front of them changes lanes and moves into oncoming traffic.

They stop at a red light before likely realizing their mistake.

Later in the video, when the footage switches to the rear dashcam, we see the Mercedes SUV driver reversing and thinking about moving into a gap between the dashcam driver and the car in front. They continue reversing while still in the oncoming lane, and a cyclist has to swerve around them as the Mercedes driver veers too closely. You can see the cyclist react to how close the Mercedes driver gets.

According to the driver who shared the video with Daily Hive, his vehicle also almost got hit, which prompted him to honk his horn. He also thought there was a chance the Mercedes driver had gotten confused by the pair of traffic lights ahead. He added that this wasn’t the first time he had seen a driver do this at that intersection in Burnaby.

The footage was initially shared with a Metro Vancouver driving group on Facebook, and many comments shared their concerns for the cyclist. Others were irked that the driver potentially put others at risk.

They got DAMN lucky that the usual reckless speeding cars through there didn’t come their way,” someone commented.Ā

Some believed the driver might have been impaired, but the driver who shared the dashcam footage doesn’t think so. Others reflected on how frustrating driving in the Metrotown area can be.

Driving around Metrotown makes me insane in the membrane,” one user replied in the comments.

Someone else replied, “I live in Burnaby and avoid that area like the plague. I’ll make the drive to Coquitlam Centre over going to Metrotown any day.”

Many others commended the dashcam driver’s musical taste.
