Brunch in Vancouver: For every occasion

Dec 19 2017, 6:06 pm

In Vancouver, brunch can be whatever you and I want it to be. Whether you’re an early riser, snoozer, instagramming fanatic, healthy eater, extreme foodie, sleep deprived or hung over, there is a brunch spot for you and everyone in between.

Vancouver is full of good brunch locales and online resources from Yelp to food bloggers (of course Vancity Buzz) and the person you overheard on the bus are willing to tell you where the ‘best’ place for brunch is.

While often all of these things are great sources of information, what does ‘best brunch’ even mean?  I’ve tried so many eggs benedicts my definition of the best brunch changes weekly.  There are so many brunch spots to choose from I often spend precious, hungry minutes every Sunday morning desperately trying to decide where to go.  Below, I have categorized brunch spots to serve your weekend morning pleasure and hopefully help narrow down your choice when you roll out of bed next weekend.

Heirloom Vegetarian is dedicated to tasty and local vegetarian and vegan food.  There are no meat options here but the menu is extensive enough that even the city’s biggest meat lovers can find something tasty.  Non-meat eaters who are looking for something different will enjoy the diversity in the menu with items such as the beet back-bacon benny.  There are lots of gluten free options available here as well.

Granville Island is often on the to-do lists for new and returning visitors to Vancouver.  Try the Edible Canada Bistro and walk off brunch by checking out the rest of what Granville Island has to offer.  There is something for everyone on the menu and the eight options make for quick decision making so you can get on and enjoy your meal.  Visitors can also pick up gourmet Canadian goods at the adjoined Gourmet Artisan Retail Shop.

Spend Time with Your Significant Other

Oakwood Bistro

The Oakwood Canadian Bistro offers a less hectic, cozy, cottage style brunch for couples looking to enjoy weekend brunch together.  The restaurant supports local farmers and sustainable Ocean Wise seafood.  Menu items are a step above regular brunch items, including items such as the confit tuna benedict, with dill hollandaise, fennel salad, and home fries or the lemon mascarpone French toast,  with blueberry compote, and maple syrup.

Cafe Medina

You may have to be dedicated to standing in line or arriving 15 minutes before opening, but Medina Café does not disappoint.  They are most famous for their lavender lattes and Belgian waffles that have even the locals standing in line.  The presentation of the food and beautiful, relaxed interior make for instagram worthy photos.

Brunch on the patio at the Local Public Eatery in Kitsilano is a great start to a summer’s day in Vancouver.  The patio fills up quickly but is great for people watching and right across the road from Kits beach.  The Huevos Rancheros with free range eggs is excellent and is best enjoyed with a Caesar in a boot.

For the weekend brunches when you’re hoping to spend a few hours catching up with friends, head over to Milestones in English Bay.  The restaurant is great for accommodating slightly larger groups in booths and lucky patrons may even snag a patio spot in the summer.  Split orders with friends and you can enjoy half an eggs benedict with a half order of their “Knife and Fork” breakfast sandwich.

Grab a quick sandwich and coffee at Musette Caffe.  Their Early Morning Breakaway Sandwich is the perfect way to fuel up before a long afternoon road bike or walk around Stanley Park.  Alternatively, stop by after an early morning run and enjoy their Super Chia as a great way to get protein and nutrients such as manganese and phosphorous.
