Bruins will try to sign Vancouver Canucks free agent Brock Boeser: report

The Boston Bruins are once again licking their lips at a pending Vancouver Canucks free agent.

Last summer, Boston swooped in and signed both Elias Lindholm and Nikita Zadorov out of Vancouver, and now they have their sights on Brock Boeser come July 1. Despite reports that Boeser might circle back to the Canucks if things go awry on the open market, the expectation is that his time in Vancouver has come to an end.

The 28-year-old is coming off a disappointing season, during which he went from 73 points in 2023-24 to just 50 this past year. That, however, hasn’t deterred the Bruins’ interest in signing him.

RG’s Jimmy Murphy reported on Monday morning that Boston has expressed trade interest in Boeser before and will be keen on signing him this summer.

“The Boston Bruins are planning a significant push to sign the pending unrestricted free agent,” Murphy reported.

The Bruins will not be alone in their pursuit of the Minnesota native. Murphy also listed the Utah Mammoth, Minnesota Wild, LA Kings, Detroit Red Wings, and Montreal Canadiens as other teams who will be vying for Boeser’s services.

After missing the playoffs for the first time since the 2015-16 season, the Bruins need some more scoring at the top of their forward group. Though a tad inconsistent, Boeser would help shore that up. Boston is projected to have $20 million in cap space to play with this summer.

Previous reports have indicated that money is less important to Boeser’s camp in these negotiations. Instead, the focus has been on finding some long-term stability wherever he ends up.

He is coming off a three-year deal that carried a $6.65 million cap hit. AFP Analytics projects his next contract to be a five-year deal that carries a cap hit of $8.4 million.

The closer we get to free agency, the more it feels as though Boeser has played his last game in a Canucks jersey.
