Seven weeks of lane reductions on Broadway at Cambie for subway construction

Expect some further prolonged vehicle lane reductions on West Broadway this spring to accommodate Broadway Subway construction work.

A bulletin issued today by the project office indicates that the one-block-long segment of West Broadway between Cambie Street and Yukon Street — the site of the Millennium Line’s future Broadway-City Hall Station — will be reduced to one lane in each direction from April 20 to roughly the first week of June 2026, for a total of about seven consecutive weeks.

This relates to the construction of a station ventilation shaft on the north side of the block, with crews and equipment mobilizing on the week of April 20 and the process of drilling and installing micropiles starting on April 27.

While this represents a significant reduction in lane capacity, vehicle traffic on Broadway between Cambie Street and Main Street has already declined substantially due to the full temporary prolonged closure of the single-block stretch between Quebec Street and Main Street since late January, with a temporary detour for both TransLink buses and general vehicle traffic created through East 8th Avenue just to the north.

The temporary four-lane traffic deck — made up of 44 panels — above the Mount Pleasant Station construction site has since been removed, and crews are now focused on infill and utility work above the subway station’s roof below-grade. The roadway between Quebec Street and Main Street is expected to reopen with one lane in each direction in late spring, with all four lanes restored by summer.

There will also be major forthcoming work to remove Broadway’s temporary traffic decks above Broadway-City Hall Station, Oak-VGH Station (on Laurel Street), South Granville Station (on Granville Street), and Arbutus Station (on Arbutus Street). A recent bulletin by the project office notes that the removal of the two-block-long temporary traffic deck between Arbutus Street and Cypress Street will soon require reducing the stretch of Broadway between Burrard Street and Arbutus Street to one lane in each direction.

Construction on SkyTrain’s Millennium Line’s Broadway extension has now visibly progressed to the station entrance buildings above street level, and the installation of the linear induction rail strip and other complex equipment on the tracks.

Testing of this $2.95-billion, 5.7-km-long SkyTrain extension is expected to begin later in 2026, ahead of the targeted opening date in Fall 2027.
