A senior member of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s inner circle will represent the Liberal Party of Canada in the upcoming federal by-election in the riding of North Vancouver-Capilano.
Today, the party has formally named Braeden Caley as its candidate for the North Shore riding, shortly after he announced his decision earlier this week to leave his role as deputy chief of staff to the prime minister.

A by-election will be held after longtime Liberal MP Jonathan Wilkinson vacated the North Vancouver-Capilano seat last month to become Canada’s new ambassador to the European Union. A by-election date has yet to be announced, but the vote could take place later this year and must be held no later than early February 2027.
Another confirmed by-election candidate is Conservative Party of Canada’s Stephen Curran, a North Shore business lawyer who also carried the party’s banner in the 2025 federal election. Curran finished second with 21,339 votes — behind Wilkinson’s 37,909 votes. Earlier this week, the Green Party of Canada also announced Shelley Luce, the former director of campaigns for Sierra Club BC, as their by-election candidate.
“I’m running to be the strongest voice for the hardworking people of North Vancouver-Capilano as part of Mark Carney’s new Liberal team, and to deliver on your priorities — building a stronger, more sustainable economy, bringing down costs, and building the local infrastructure and homes we need for a growing North Shore,” said Caley in a statement today.
Sachit Mehra, president of the Liberal Party of Canada, in a statement today, added, “Braeden Caley has spent his career turning ambitious ideas into real results for Canadians and he has the experience needed to deliver the serious solutions this crucial moment demands. Braeden will work tirelessly with Mark Carney and our new Liberal team in Parliament to build a stronger, safer, and more prosperous future for the hardworking people of North Vancouver-Capilano.”
Caley has spent more than two decades working in government, political campaigns, and public policy. Born and raised in B.C., he began his career in the constituency offices of two Metro Vancouver MPs.
From 2011 to 2016, under the Vision Vancouver party, he worked in the Vancouver mayor’s office of Gregor Robertson, initially as the office’s press secretary and later as director of policy and communications. He then moved to Ottawa to become Justin Trudeau’s senior director of communications for the federal Liberal Party, before serving as president and CEO of the independent progressive think tank Canada 2020.
Caley was the national campaign director for Mark Carney’s successful bid to become federal Liberal leader in early 2025. Soon afterward, he served as the party’s national campaign co-director for that year’s federal election.
He has served as Carney’s deputy chief of staff since March 2025, advising the government as it responded to U.S. tariffs and pursued policies intended to strengthen the Canadian economy, accelerate major projects, increase housing construction, and reduce the country’s reliance on its southern neighbour.
His candidacy is expected to focus heavily on economic development, affordability, trade infrastructure, housing, and the transportation pressures of the North Shore.
