An 11-year-old boy from Vancouver died in a three-vehicle collision, near Oyen, Alberta, on Wednesday, while his family was driving across the country to move to Ontario.

RCMP say the boy, the eldest of three children in the SUV, died at the scene. The investigation indicates that the family’s SUV stopped behind a semi-tractor trailer unit which had stopped in a construction zone. A second semi-tractor trailer struck the rear of the SUV.

The two adults and two other children in the vehicle were airlifted to Calgary hospitals with various injuries. The drivers of the two tractor trailers were uninjured, says RCMP.

A GoFundMe page started by a family friend says the family of five was relocating from Vancouver to St. Catherine’s, Ontario.

The mother, Carla Chambers Jeffreys, and her youngest son have potentially life-threatening injuries, with the family’s daughter now in stable condition, according to the online fundraiser.

The campaign has raised over $30,000 at the time of this article’s publication.

The crash still remains under investigation.
