Boeser heading to free agency after latest Vancouver Canucks pitch falls short

A late push by the Vancouver Canucks to try and sign Brock Boeser to a contract extension has fallen short.

It has been presumed from the trade deadline onwards that Boeser would head elsewhere in free agency, though there had been some noise in recent days that the Canucks brass had circled back in hopes of working out an extension. How close those talks came remains unknown, but Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff reported on Friday afternoon that the 28-year-old will indeed be hitting the free-agent market.

Boeser is coming off a down season by his standards, notching 25 goals and 50 points in 75 games. Those numbers came after a career year in 2023-24, which saw him score 40 goals and 73 points. He continued that into the playoffs as well with seven tallies and 12 points in 12 outings.

Despite the down season in 2024-25, AFP Analytics is projecting Boeser to sign a six-year, $50.8 million deal that would carry a cap hit of roughly $8.5 million. There is reason for the Canucks to be hesitant about handing out such a contract to a player who has surpassed the 60-point mark just once in his career.

That said, the hardest thing to do in hockey is score goals, and Boeser has excelled at it. He’s surpassed 20 goals six times in his eight-year career, and is sure to do so plenty more before his career is finished. Assuming this is indeed the end between himself and the Canucks, there will be several teams out there who show interest and are willing to give him a big contract.

Should this be it for Boeser in Vancouver, he will have finished his time with the Canucks having scored 204 goals and 434 points in 554 games.

More to come…
