Shawnigan Lake RCMP have confirmed that a body has been recovered from the vehicle that crashed through a B.C. Ferries gate and went into the water.

The incident occurred at approximately 8:10 a.m. at the Mill Bay Ferry terminal, located in Saanich Inlet on Vancouver Island, when a white SUV drove off the terminal at a high rate of speed.

The MV Klitsa, which serves the Brentwood to Mill Bay route, had already left the terminal and was approximately 2.5 kilometres away when the vehicle launched off the ramp, flew in the air and crashed into the ocean.

The driver has been identified by police as a 90-year-old male and was the only occupant at the time of the incident. The vehicle, which sank into the waters, has also been raised and recovered.

As a safety precaution, the Mill Bay Ferry terminal remains closed and all ferry sailings have been canceled until further notice.
