BMO Vancouver Marathon 2011

This Sunday is the BMO Vancouver Marathon. Expect close to 15,000 people hitting the streets in and around downtown Vancouver. Of course with any marathon comes the dreaded road closures. In order to avoid driver frustration see the road closures below.

BRIDGES

Burrard Bridge: (8:00-1:30pm)Expect delays as southbound traffic will be closed on the Burrard Bridge from 8am-1pm as runners will be on the bridge deck exiting southbound onto Cornwall. Northbound traffic will be restricted for one lane access from 8:30–1:30pm as runners will be on the bridge heading northbound. All access northbound into the city will be restricted to Burrard as access to Pacific Blvd will be closed until 2pm.

Granville Bridge: (6am-10am) off ramp to 4th Ave southbound will be closed from 6am-10am, but otherwise will have unrestricted access all lanes north & southbound throughout the duration of the event on Sunday.

Cambie Bridge: (midnight-5pm) off ramp to Pacific Blvd northbound will be closed midnight-5pm. Additionally, the off ramp to 6th ave southbound will be closed from 6am-10am, but otherwise will have unrestricted access in all other lanes north & southbound throughout the duration of the event on Sunday

Lion’s Gate Bridge: (6am-10:15am) the entrance into Stanley Park off the causeway near Prospect Point & Lost Lagoon will be closed from 6am-10:15am, otherwise uninterrupted access north & southbound along Highway 1A/99.

DOWNTOWN

Canada Place/Cruise Ship Access (7am-10am): If you are picking up people disembarking from cruise ships at Canada Place, the detour route is Broadway to Clark Drive,north on Clark Drive to Powell,west on Powell to Main, north on Main to Waterfront Rd, west on Waterfront Rd to the Cruise Ship Terminal. Egress from the Terminal will be east on Waterfront Rd to Hawks, south on Hawks to Powell, east on Powell to Clark Drive.

Coal Harbour: (7am-11am): Denman, Georgia & Burrard St will be the most direct routes/access throughout the city as well as to view points along the race course in Coal Harbour. Runners will be proceeding West on Hastings St restricting access to local traffic throughout the Coal Harbour area from Canada Place to Stanley Park.

WEST END

English Bay & Beach Ave: Access (7am,-12pm): Davie, Robson & Georgia St will provide the most direct routes/access (7am-12pm) east & westbound. Denman & Burrard will provide north & southbound access to the race course & city as any other routes will be through residential neighborhoods where traffic measures are in place to ensure no through traffic flow. Expect significant crowds at the corner of Denman & Davie St, & Barricades in place to access Beach & Pacific ave.. The event organizers do not recommend driving through any residential neighborhoods and to rememberto be respectful of the people living near the course when cheering for participants.

CHINATOWN

Main St & Hastings (5am-10am): Hastings will have uninterrupted east/ westbound access until Burrard St.  Main St will provide unrestricted access north & southbound access until Cordova. Pender, Columbia, Abbott will be closed (6am-10am), access from Hastings & Main will be available. Expect delays around Main & Cordova one block north of Hastings. VPD & Traffic Control Persons will be on site ensuring controlled access through this intersection for access into Gastown. Additional delays may beat Terminal & Main/2ndAve (6am-10am) due to road closures on Quebec & 2nd Ave.

STRATHCONA

Hastings, Main St. & Clark Drive Access (7am-10am): Hastings will provide unrestricted east/westbound access. Clark Dr will have uninterrupted north/southbound access. Expect delays at Clark Dr. & Venables (7am-10am) due to road closures west of Clark Dr. Main St will provide unrestricted access north & southbound access until Cordova. Expect delays around Main & Cordova one block north of Hastings. VPD & Traffic Control Persons will be on site ensuring controlled access through this intersection for access into Gastown.
