With a 15-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles today, the Toronto Blue Jays have won the American League East Division.
It’s the first time the Blue Jays have won their division since 1993, which is also the last time they won the World Series.
Winning the division was of paramount importance because it allows Toronto to avoid the one-game Wild Card playoff, where anything can happen. Manager John Gibbons is now able to set-up his pitching rotation for the Division Series and get his ace, David Price, into as many postseason games as possible.
The Blue Jays have been on an incredible role ever since GM Alex Anthopoulos acquired David Price, Troy Tulowitzki and Ben Revere before the trade deadline. The Blue Jays were 7 games back of the Yankees before the Price deal just two months ago. Today, the Jays sit 6 games up on New York.
And Toronto may not be done yet. They’re 2 games up on the Kansas City Royals for top spot in the American League with only 5 games remaining.
Toronto now has 92 wins on the season and have a chance at matching win totals from their World Series years in 1992 (96) and 1993 (95). The franchise record for wins in a season is 99, achieved in 1985.
The Blue Jays will begin the playoffs at home on Thursday, October 8.
