On a night where they could have clinched a playoff spot, the Toronto Blue Jays instead suffered their worst loss in 25 years.
It will be easy for Toronto to flush that dreadful defeat if they’re able to clinch a playoff spot on Saturday when they face the Kansas City Royals.
The Jays can solidify a postseason berth on Saturday by exacting revenge against the Royals with a win, combined with a loss by any one of the following three teams: Detroit Tigers, Boston Red Sox, or the Cleveland Guardians.
There’s a scenario today where the Jays could clinch without a win. The Guardians play a double-header against the Minnesota Twins on Saturday. If they lose both of those games, combined with losses by the Tigers and Red Sox, then the Jays could find themselves in a playoff spot by the end of the night.
Perhaps the Jays shouldn’t put the champagne on ice just yet. The Guardians have won nine of their last 10 games, and are facing a Twins team that is second-last in the American League with a record of 66-87.
For the Blue Jays, they’re probably more concerned about getting back on track. They’ve lost three straight games, punctuated by a 20-1 beatdown at the hands of the Royals on Friday night.
Max Scherzer didn’t make it out of the first inning after allowing seven runs, and the Blue Jays used a total of seven pitchers during the loss.
It was the worst defeat the Jays have suffered since Sept. 28, 2000, when they lost 23-1 to the Baltimore Orioles.
