People looking to drive to the United States for Black Friday deals or American Thanksgiving celebrations may encounter lengthy delays at the border.
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has issued a reminder to travellers that “it can be extra busy at the border” during the upcoming American long weekend.
“The CBSA is dedicated to planning and preparing for peak periods, including long weekends…” the agency posted online. “We monitor traveller volumes and take measures to minimize border wait times at land ports of entry and at international airports, without compromising safety and security.”

Travellers are urged by the CBSA to check border wait times before they depart. For shorter wait times and less traffic, consider alternative ports of entry or head out early â mornings are the best time to avoid the long lines. Also, check the port of entryâs hours of operation.
Other tips provided by the CBSA include being prepared to declare your items. If youâre returning after 24 hours, you can bring back tax- and duty-free goods valued at $200 and goods valued at $800 after 48 hours.
âIf arriving by land, you are responsible for everything inside your vehicle,â states the CBSA.

Itâs important to note that there are restrictions on bringing poultry from the USA to Canada, and unfortunately, that includes homemade food or any leftovers that contain poultry. You can read more about it here.
And if youâre travelling in and out of the country with prescription medicine that contains controlled substances, you must declare the medication when you arrive in Canada.
“The best way to save time is to be open and honest with the border services officer. If you are not sure about what to declare, don’t hesitate to ask,” CBSA added online.

More than 30 Canada-US border crossings will have their hours tweaked next year, and two of them are in BC.
The CBSA recently announced that it will be adjusting service hours at 35 land ports of entry across the country starting January 6, 2025.
