Tick, Tock – Meet You Under the BIRKS Clock

The famous 100 year old street clock is back on the block, just in time for 2010. On Monday, January 11, 2010 Birks will celebrate the completion of the clock’s restoration in time to welcome the world and provide our international visitors a place to meet like many Vancouverites before them.

The rare four-sided street clock has stood the test of time. Since 1907, the Birks clock has been a stalwart fixture on the streets of Vancouver.
For more than 100 years, the clock has provided a public service to Vancouverites by offering reliable time – accurate within two seconds since construction – and a familiar location to meet with friends, family and visitors. Generations of Vancouverites have arranged a downtown rendez-vous with one simple phrase – “Meet you under the Birks clock.”

The historic Birks Street Clock stands 6.5 metres high and has undergone extensive restoration over the last two years including over 280 hours of labour and replacement of over 36 intricate parts. The clock’s facelift includes new pieces including the clock face, dials, roof ornamentation and a modern internal heating system.

The erection of the refurbished timepiece marks the complete restoration of one of downtown Vancouver’s busiest intersections and promises to be an important fixture on our city streets for centuries to come. It also completes Birks’ Vancouver flagship store transformation as the Official Supplier of Jewellery for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. In case you missed out we were first Vancouver site to join Birks in giving away a $350 charm bracelet and had over 250 people entered that contest in the span of 5 days.
