It's a bird, it's a plane... it's Canadian Superman coins

The Royal Canadian Mint has unveiled four new collector coins featuring DC Comics’ iconic art from the comic book covers of Superman.

The series of coins were unveiled at Toronto’s Fan Expo Canada earlier today and are a continuation of last year’s sold-out Superman seven coin series.

“We’re thrilled to partner with DC Entertainment to once again offer the Royal Canadian Mint another side of the Superman coin with this new collection inspired by fan-favorite DC Comics’ comic book covers from the rich world of the Superman mythos,” said Karen McTier, Executive Vice President, Domestic Licensing and Worldwide Marketing, Warner Bros. Consumer Products.

The 2014 limited edition series consists of four coin designs:

• A 14-karat gold $100 coin with cover art from “The Adventures of Superman” edition #596, 2001.
• A 1/2 oz. fine silver $10 coin with cover art from “Action Comics” edition #1, 1938.
• A fine silver $15 coin with cover art from “Action Comics” edition #419, 1972.
• A 1 oz. fine silver $20 coin with cover art from “Superman Annual” edition #1, 2012.

Ten thousand coins were minted for each of the three silver coins while 2,000 coins were minted for the $100 gold coin.

“Superman’s legend continues with these expertly crafted coins produced in stunning colour by Mint employees,” said Patrick Hadsipantelis, Vice-President of Marketing and Communications at the Royal Canadian Mint. “The use of different finishes and engraving techniques bring the world’s most famous Super Hero to life and exemplify the Mint’s internationally renowned craftsmanship.”

The new Superman coins can be purchased from the Mint at www.mint.ca/superman. The coins will also be available at the Royal Canadian Mint boutique store on Vancouver’s Granville Street and select Canada Post outlets.
