Do you enjoy working with young people? Are you looking for a fun, fulfilling way to give back to your community? Would you like to help a young girl succeed and believe in herself?
Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland is currently looking for volunteer mentors, and for just one to two hours per week, you can make a BIG difference in a young girl’s life.
Even better? Big Sisters offers three different mentoring programs! Depending on your availabilty, there is a program to meet the varied needs of Big Sister volunteers and their Little Sisters.
Big Sisters Mentoring Program
Spend two hours a week with a Little Sister doing fun activities you both enjoy! Go to the beach, ride your bikes, have a cooking adventure, watch a movie or simply hang out and chat!
As a Big Sister, you will help a young girl grow and gain self-confidence through the simple act of spending time together, and through being a friend.
Study Buddy Mentoring Program
Spend just one hour a week helping your Little Sister Study Buddy meet her academic goals! With the support of a Study Buddy, Little Sisters are encouraged and equipped to improve their educational performance, which contributes to their overall self-esteem and confidence.
Go Girls! Group Mentoring Program
Go Girls! mentors (age 19 to 25) co-facilitate an eight week Go Girls! program held in Vancouver, Coquitlam and Burnaby schools. They help girls (ages 11 to 14) learn to embrace physical activity and healthy eating, and develop a positive self-image!
Studies show that mentoring services like Big Sisters help kids stay in school, avoid risky behaviour – like bullying, and experience the importance of helping others in their community, first hand!
As Little Sister Anna said: “My Big Sister believes in me and likes me for who I am. I can tell she really listens when I talk. She has confidence in my abilities, which makes me feel confident. This makes me want to be a Big Sister when I grow older, and help a young girl just like she has helped me!”
Little Sisters aren’t the only ones benefitting from these programs – A 2009 Standard Life survey compared the attitudes of Big Sisters with those of average Canadians and found the ‘Bigs’ tended to be happier, more optimistic and more energetic!
According to one Big Sister: “Being a Big Sister has been the single most impactful experience of my life. I see ours as a friendship for life, and cannot wait to see what is in store for my Little Sister!
