Junior hockey fans in the Metro Vancouver area might soon recognize a familiar name skating around the ice.

Cole Bieksa, son of former Vancouver Canucks legend Kevin, has signed with the BCHL’s Coquitlam Express.

Some notable Express alumni who have played in the NHL include Alex Kerfoot, Milan Lucic, Mathew Barzal, and Kyle Turris.

Cole has been playing for Fairmont Prep, a team based in California, where Kevin finished his career. Kevin has been leading his son’s team as the head coach behind the bench.

The 17-year-old Cole has 73 points in 55 games this season with his team. While his dad played on the blue line, the younger Bieksa is a forward.

Cole is currently listed at 5-foot-11 and 154 pounds on Elite Prospects. He’s a right-handed shot.

The Express team is currently fifth in the Coastal Conference with a 23-14-4-2 record. Bieksa won’t join the team until the start of next season.

Cole brings the Bieksa name back to British Columbia, where it’s among the most beloved in the province’s hockey history. Kevin was responsible for one of the most iconic goals in Vancouver Canucks history, scoring the overtime winner in Game 5 of the Western Conference Final to send his team to the Stanley Cup Final.

Bieksa isn’t the only player from that 2011 team with a son who’s going on to do big things in sports. Henrik Sedin’s kid, Valter, has already made his professional soccer debut with the Vancouver Whitecaps 2 squad.

Following his playing days, Bieksa has become one of the most popular hockey analysts, sitting on the panel of Hockey Night in Canada.
