Best sushi in Vancouver

Vancouver is blessed with some of the best sushi restaurants in North America. From fine dining establishments to budget-friendly eateries, there is a sushi spot here for every kind of palate.

When it comes to where to find the best sushi in Vancouver, we turned to Colleen Ha, a local foodie and avid Instagrammer who has made it her mission to seek out the most delicious sushi havens in the city, to curate her list of her picks for where to find top quality selections.

We asked Ha when her love affair with sushi began. She explains:

Sushi has always been a part of my diet, but my love for sushi and the desire to learn more about it has grown more deeply in the last few years. I’ve always been a natural foodie and love discovering and trying new gems in the city. With so many fantastic sushi spots in Vancouver my “restaurants to visit list” is consistently made up of at least 80 per cent sushi restaurants. I simply can’t get enough.

We also asked Ha what inspired her to create and dedicate her entire Instagram feed to sushi. She tells us:

When I set up my Instagram page, it was just a novelty idea; I never expected anything to come out of it really. I’m just your typical Vancouverite (with a love of sushi). My Instagram feed’s popularity grew bigger and faster than I ever imagined.

Finally, we asked Ha what her staple sushi order is. Ha reveals:

My staple sushi order is an assorted sashimi platter, a chef’s choice sushi set, or whatever the chef recommends.

“With fish delivered from Japan, some of which you can’t find anywhere else in the city, Sushi Bar Maumi is my favourite sushi restaurant in Vancouver. Enjoy authentic Japanese style omakase at the sushi bar, while taking in the full view of the chef mastering each piece of nigiri before he serves it to you. The menu changes nightly and features fish that has been delivered that very day. The kanpachi (yellowtail) and uni (sea urchin) are absolute game-changers!”

Miku

“Miku is my absolute favourite place for melt-in-your-mouth Oshi Sushi — it simply can’t be beat. I never leave the restaurant without ordering a few specialty rolls, like the Miku Roll (made up of salmon, crab, uni, cucumber, tobiko, and a special Miku sauce). You can also guarantee their sashimi is always fresh.”

Victoria Sushi

“This place used to be a hidden gem, but I’m pretty certain the word is out. Often called the more wallet-friendly version of the Miku Roll, Victoria Sushi’s Aburi Tobiko Roll is most definitely comparable and more importantly delicious. Their mango scallop roll is outstanding as well.”

Address: 10-15 Royal Avenue East, New Westminster

Sushi By Yuji

“Another amazing sushi restaurant. Not to be missed are the unagi (eel — shipped from Hokkaido), ika (squid), and toro (tuna) selections. The Shiro Roll seems to fly under the radar, but is a delight to the taste buds. The quail egg is something else!”

Address: 2252 Kingsway, Vancouver
Phone: 604-434-0003

Naruto Sushi

“A typical “Vancouver special” sushi joint that serves affordable lunch and dinner specials, with flair. Naruto Sushi also serves brown rice sushi as an alternative. I love their Winter Roll, as well as anything with their spicy salmon sashimi in it. It has a crunch that will leave you wanting more.”

Address: 2763 Commercial Drive, Vancouver
Phone: 604-558-3858

Matsuyama

“This is my go-to restaurant for a late night sushi fix. You’ll often find me here after 9 p.m. digging into a bowl of crab and tobiko salad or chowing down a crab and ebi tempura cone. Matsuyama’s late night menu contains everything one needs to satisfy those late night cravings.”

Address: 8500 Alexandra Road, Richmond
Phone: 604-207-9178

Sushi Yoi

“Definitely a gem on this side of the city. Sushi Yoi’s toro, hamachi, and uni nigiris are the reason I come back here time and time again.”

Address: 1815 Rosser Avenue, Burnaby
Phone: 604-559-2288

Hanamori Sushi

“It’s not easy finding quality sushi restaurants outside of the lower mainland, but Hanamori is a small cozy restaurant in Coquitlam that offers stellar aburi. I can never choose between the wild salmon or the scallop, so heck, I always order both!”

Address: 102-511 Rochester Avenue, Coquitlam
Phone: 604-939-2422

Kyuzo Japanese Restaurant

“A higher priced authentic Japanese restaurant that matches their quality with their top tier service. O-toro (tuna belly sushi) is my favourite and their version of it is phenomenal and probably the best I’ve ever tasted in BC. Their foie gras is always perfectly seared and scrumptious.”
