Spa Session: Miraj Hammam offers Middle Eastern steam and scrub

We’re pro-spa. In my mind, there is always a time and place for spa treatments of all shapes, sizes and uniquenesses. So when we heard about a local spa that specialized in hammam (steam) and gommage (exfoliation) – the equivalent to a European Turkish bath, or a Korean jjimjilbang – we had to see it for ourselves.

Tucked away in a corner in South Granville is Miraj Hammam Spa. This is not your run of the mill spa. Here they will get you down in the buff, detoxified in a steam chamber, then scrubbed via a full body exfoliation from your personal esthetician.

The location is quaint, and the services are naturally quite different, in a good and interesting way. Luckily for us, its one of the only places in Canada where you can experience a true Hammam treatment, meaning if you’re a fan, frequent visits are not a problem.

We chatted with Miraj Spa’s owner Surinder to learn more about hammam and gommage.

What’s your elevator pitch?

Miraj Hammam Spa is a culture experience in a spa environment. No need to book a flight to Marrakech when you can experience one of it’s highlights on the corner of Granville and 6th.

What should spa guests expect from a service at Miraj?

In centuries past, The Hammam was known as the silent doctor. The Hammam (steam) and Gommage (black Moroccan soap exfoliation) and a full body massage followed by Arab mint tea and sweet cake in our sumptuous Sultana Lounge.

What are some must-follow etiquette tips when visiting the spa?

All treatments include the use of a sarong, robe, towels and slippers. The Gommage treatment is usually performed without clothing. We can provide disposable underwear or you may bring a bathing suit if you prefer, but it is not required.

What are the benefits of hammam services?

Detoxification, cleansing, stimulates circulation and the lymphatic system and with the ambience of the spa stimulate your senses and imagination and the essential oils in our luxurious massage products promote to calm the nervous system.

What should one expect post-gommage treatment?

We offer formulas of 15, 30, 45, 60 and 90 minute full body massages as well as full body masques, mini facials and full aromatherapy facial.

What inspired you to open the first Miraj Hammam Spa?

La Mosquee in Paris was the inspiration for the creation of Miraj Hammam spa. The idea of cleansing and exfoliating the body prior to massage became part of Surinder’s essential routine in Paris. As well as the idea of a cultural component in a spa environment that offers the romance and escapism of the North African culture.
