Single people know that the dating scene in B.C. can be quite a difficult one to navigate, and for men who are smokers, attracting women may prove extra difficult.

Some new insights from ResearchCo reveal how British Columbians feel about smoking (including marijuana) and vaping.

The short version of it is that smoking and vaping aren’t very popular, but it’s a bit more nuanced than that.

One of the more interesting findings is how smoking and vaping play a role in the dating scene.

“Larger proportions of British Columbians say they would not consider dating a person who vaped (57 per cent) or who smoked tobacco (62 per cent),” ResearchCo reveals.

It’s even more lopsided for women.

“Almost two-thirds of women (65 per cent) say they would not consider dating a tobacco smoker.”

ResearchCo also has a peculiar finding regarding folks who voted for the BC Green Party in the 2024 provincial election.

“67 per cent of British Columbians who voted for the BC Green Party in last year’s provincial election would not consider dating someone who used electronic cigarettes.”

ResearchCo’s survey of British Columbians regarding smoking and vaping led it to the conclusion that most people in the province back strict limits on smoking and vaping, including in residential buildings, schools, and even some public spaces, most of which are already in place.

For example, 87 per cent of those who responded to the survey said they support smoking and vaping bans in indoor spaces like transit, restaurants and workplaces. A smaller portion, but still the majority of residents (67 per cent), support the existing smoking rules in parks, park areas, and beaches.

The results are similar when British Columbians were asked about vaping, with an overwhelming majority (88 per cent) agreeing with banning vaping in all public and private K-12 schools.

ResearchCo also outlines a small gap in regulations around smoking and vaping.

“At this moment, there is no province-wide regulation that addresses smoking or vaping in multi-family buildings. More than three-in-four British Columbians (77 per cent) are in favour of a ban on smoking (tobacco and marijuana) in multi-family buildings, while just under three-in-four (73 per cent) would forbid vaping in multi-family buildings,” the report states.

There were also some findings regarding folks who consume cannabis.

“Half of British Columbians say they would not consider dating a person who smoked marijuana—a proportion that rises to 67 per cent among those of South Asian heritage and to 64 per cent among those of East Asian descent.”

Do these findings resonate with you? Would you date someone who smoked cigarettes, smoked marijuana, or vaped?
