This year, BC Liquor Stores are celebrating an incredible 30 years of BC wines. And while patio season is
a little bit very different this year, that doesn’t mean you still can’t make the most of this gorgeous time of year.
Whether you’re catching up with friends, having a romantic dinner, or celebrating a birthday, there’s a wine to match every occasion this season.
We can’t think of too many better ways to spend the summer than by sipping on some of BC’s best wine. After all, if there’s something we know a thing or two about in this province, it’s some top quality grapes.
In celebration of 30 years, here are some of the top picks for the patio this season.
‘Tis the season to drink rosé, and this stunning pale variety from Bartier Bros in Oliver is a go-to. A glass of this dry, fruity, and structured yet soft rosé with notes of strawberry, raspberry, lychee, and pear goes perfectly with lighter summer dishes.
More in the mood for a vino tinto? This rich Cabernet Franc from Black Sage in the Okanagan has notes of dried sage, smoky mocha, vanilla, plum, and black cherry and pairs perfectly with hearty dishes like beef and mushroom.
Even though it’s summer, it doesn’t have to be all white wine all the time. Mix it up with a bottle of red, like this beautiful Bordeaux-style blend from CedarCreek. It was made in tribute to Senator Ross Fitzpatrick, a big player in the fruit and wine industry in the Okanagan. A glass of this red with notes of red and dark fruits, liquorice, spice, and vanilla won’t last long.
It’s warm outside, and that’s cause for celebration amongst other things (like getting outside for the first time in months.) Pour a glass of this beautiful Brut from Fitzpatrick and cheers your loved ones. This complex bubbly is light with lots of layers, crisp acidity, and notes of orchard fruit.
If you’re feeling a red wine, but are looking for something less heavy, perhaps a pinot is more your style. This Pinot Noir from Gray Monk in Lake Country is light and juicy and has notes of strawberry, raspberry, and savoury herbs. And if you’re looking for some culinary inspiration, it pairs perfectly with grilled salmon or a Nicoise salad.
In the summertime, it can seem like all we drink is white wine. It’s delicious, light, and refreshing — why wouldn’t we? But sometimes it can be hard to find something new and exciting.
This is why Hester Creek’s Character White has so much, well, character. The blend has six different varietals packed into a glass, so you can try a little bit of everything at once. You’ll find notes of tree fruits, sweetness, and citrus to offset spicy dishes.
Another impressive character on the white wine list is this Pinot Gris from Mission Hill. It’s packed with flavours of fruit, like juicy peaches, and also has elements of pumpkin pie spice and toasted almonds. Pair it with some pasta, seafood, or salad and you’re set.
Another fruity variety of white wine comes from this Quails Gate Pinot Gris Pinot Blanc blend. You’ll find notes of nectarine, Asian pear, green apple, and white flowers. There’s a reason it’s one of the top-selling VQA white wines. Just make sure you pair it with good company.
