'Not enough': Sun Peaks ski resort opening delayed due to lack of snow

Nov 18 2025, 11:30 pm

A popular B.C. ski resort just north of Kamloops is delaying its opening due to a lack of snow.

Sun Peaks Resort, a popular ski spot with downhill and cross-country trails and other attractions, was initially scheduled to open on Nov. 22.

“Rarely do we have to postpone our opening weekend,” said Aaron Macdonald, the chief marketing and communications officer for Sun Peaks Resort, in a statement.

“We have a fantastic summer grooming program where we cut brush and grass to allow us to open with less snow than other areas. This year, with recent mild temperatures across the Pacific Northwest, we have to delay opening until we have good conditions to offer our guests,” he added.

Macdonald also said that it’s only a matter of time before the snow arrives.

Anyone who pre-purchased tickets, rentals, or lessons between Nov. 22 and 26 will receive a full refund automatically. Folks who had accommodation bookings are encouraged to contact the property they booked with directly.

While Sun Peaks has been hit with some snow at higher elevations, the resort said there’s “not enough to open for public skiing.”

In a press release, the B.C. ski resort says, “With colder temperatures in the forecast, resort officials are optimistic about welcoming guests back to the slopes on Nov. 27.”

Despite the opening date being rescheduled, Sun Peaks is advising visitors that the rescheduled date still remains weather-dependent and that evaluations are being made on a day-to-day basis.
