BC Place Wins IES Lighting Control Innovation Award Of Merit

The Lighting Control Innovation Award was created in 2011 as part of the Illuminating Engineering Society’s Illumination Awards program, which recognizes professionalism, ingenuity and originality in lighting design. BC Place has received the Lighting Control Innovation award for the month of March. 

The lighting design focused on the façade, the roof and support structure. Using a sophisticated computer controls system capable of processing color and sequenced lighting shows the design provided preprogrammed and live control of the building façade and roof with the ability to change its appearance both statically and dynamically.

BC Place is by far the best use of lighting in the city of Vancouver, with Science World and City Hall being other notable buildings with great lighting feature.

In a city that is dark and grey for six months of the year, one would think that the city’s architecture would attempt to brighten up the night sky. However, in Vancouver, lighting features on buildings for the most part are non-existent or if they do feature great lighting features, neighbours will scream light pollution in an effort to protect their suburban dream in an urban setting. The most notable example of that would be the West Pender Place lighting battle.
