BC Place to glow rainbow colours for Gay Pride Weekend

Dec 19 2017, 7:29 pm

On Saturday and Sunday night, the Northern Lights display will be be bursting with the colours of the rainbow in celebration of Gay Pride Weekend.

The rainbow display will be lit up during both evenings from sunset to 11 p.m.

The stadium’s upper sections are frequently lit up in colours for events and sports games held inside the stadium or to commemorate special occasions, charities and holidays. In November 2012, the lighting display animated a giant Union Jack to mark the arrival of Sir Paul McCartney for his concert at the stadium.

The display uses 1700 ‘ETFE’ panels stacked four rows high, and 6,800 linear feet of energy-efficient LED lights to create customizable lighting displays.

This year marks the 36th anniversary of LGBT Pride in Vancouver. Although events have been all week long, the major celebrations kick off this weekend with the Davie Village Block Party on Friday followed by both the Pride Parade and Sunset Beach Pride Festival taking place on Sunday.

About 650,000 people are expected to attend Sunday’s Pride events in downtown Vancouver.
