BC Hydro has announced new initiatives that allow customers to earn free money.
With the fall season approaching and temperatures dropping, electricity bills will be top of mind, but BC Hydro is offering a way for customers to save and even earn money through some new programs.
BC Hydro says that over 130,000 customers have earned rewards by shifting their usage during peak times. It has also announced a new Peak Saver program, which includes bonuses such as $150 for enrolling in a smart thermostat or $300 for enrolling in an eligible networked EV charger.
Peak Saver is a “voluntary rewards program,” and BC Hydro says it helps customers manage demand during peak times. There are two ways you can take part as a customer:
- The Peak Saver Challenge: Through this challenge, customers are to reduce their consumption by a specified amount during peak events, and if they are successful, they’ll earn a financial reward.
- Peak Saver Connected: Customers would enroll a smart device, such as a thermostat, EV charger, hot water controller, or battery, and receive $50 per season.
If you did enroll an eligible device, BC Hydro is offering some bonus cash in addition to its seasonal incentives:
- Enrolling a smart thermostat for electric baseboard heaters would earn you a season incentive of $50 and a $100 bonus
- Enrolling a networked EV charger would earn you $50 plus a $250 bonus
- Enrolling in a battery energy storage system would earn you a $250 incentive plus a $500 bonus
- Enrolling a load controller would earn you a $50 incentive and a $100 bonus
Unfortunately, earlier this year, the province ended the B.C. climate action tax credit, with April 2025 being the final payment date. Hundreds of dollars were up for grabs. These BC Hydro bonuses might be one way to offset some of the lost cash for customers who need it.
