Residents of some Canadian provinces, including B.C., will be able to get their hands on a unique and historic coin in exchange for pocket change.

The Royal Canadian Mint has unveiled the Canada’s Unknown Soldier $2 commemorative circulation coin.

According to the Royal Canadian Mint, the coin marks the 25th anniversary of the repatriation of Canada’s Unknown Soldier, as well as the completion of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the National War Memorial in Ottawa.

“I feel very energized by having worked on the commemorative coin as well after sculpting the original Tomb of the Unknown Soldier twenty-five years ago,” said artist and creator of the coin, Mary-Ann Liu, in a statement.

“It is one of the most significant projects in my life. I am reminded of the sacrifices made for Canada and the continual efforts necessary to maintain our country. I am grateful for the opportunity to be a part of it.”

The coin features several unique features.

For B.C. residents, the coins will be available in two different regions, including Victoria on Vancouver Island and Richmond in Metro Vancouver.

The coin will be available on Wednesday, Nov. 26, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Shoppers Drug Mart on 3511 Blandshard Street, in Victoria.

Then, at Oomomo in Richmond, the coin will be available on Friday, Nov. 28 and Saturday, Nov. 29, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

As a bonus for residents in Victoria and Richmond, the B.C. exchanges will also offer the opportunity to get a $1 commemorative circulation coin for the 150th Anniversary of the Supreme Court of Canada, and the $2 coin celebrating the life and art of Daphne Odjig.

Admission at the coin exchange events will be free, but the Royal Canadian Mint warns that there will be a limit on the number of coins guests can exchange, “while supplies last.”

“Coin exchanges are cash-only transactions; any Canadian circulation coin or banknote denomination is acceptable.”
