A busy B.C. highway will see increased noise and traffic delays this summer

If you’re planning on taking the Mary Hill Bypass between Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam over the next several weeks, you may face some delays or deal with added noise.
The B.C. Ministry of Transportation and Transit announced today that they will be starting nighttime lane closures as early as Monday, July 6, to allow for geotechnical work for corridor planning.
“Lanes will be closed from the United Boulevard on- and off-ramp leading to Mary Hill Bypass (Highway 7B), through to the intersection of Shaughnessy and Argue streets, from 9 p.m. until 6 a.m., Monday through Thursday, until Aug. 17, 2026,” reads a release from the Ministry.
As the contractor does the work, one travel lane will stay open in each direction at all times.
General commercial traffic (three metres or less) will still be able to travel on this route during lane closures, but oversized loads will require special permits or will be directed to alternative routes.
No lane closures are planned during weekends.
The Ministry is also warning of increased noise at Mary Hill Bypass while crews are working.
“Crews are expected to perform nighttime geotechnical investigations and drilling, with noise and traffic expected to occur irregularly around the Shaughnessy-and-Argue Intersection within the Mary Hill Bypass,” reads the release.

Drivers in the Lower Mainland can expect delays on a number of other roads. For example, B.C. is investing over $100 million in resurfacing over 200 kilometres of highway and roads in the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island this summer, including in the Abbotsford area, Hope, and North Shore.
Further, work to widen Highway 1 through the Fraser Valley is ongoing this year, as the province increases the number of lanes on the Mount Lehman Interchange from three to five. To accommodate construction, traffic on the Mount Lehman structure is reduced from three to two lanes, anticipated to last until the end of 2026.
