Buying Girl Guide cookies has been a tradition for many Canadian families for years, but now scammers are using the treats to take advantage of B.C. residents.
The Better Business Bureau (BBB) reports that the scam involves fraudulent ads being shared online.
“These posts often overcharge, request e-transfers, and never deliver any cookies,” BBB says.
The official BC Girl Guides Facebook account said that it has seen recent scam attempts in “several areas” of the province.
“This trend aligns with a broader issue: online purchase scams ranked as the 4th riskiest scam in Canada according to the 2024 BBB Risk Report, accounting for 32.2 per cent of all reported scams,” BBB notes.
“Girl Guide cookies are one of those feel-good traditions that bring communities together across Canada. By supporting the Girl Guides, you’re helping empower young leaders in our community,” said Neesha Hothi, director of marketing and communications at BBB Mainland B.C., in a statement.
“Unfortunately, scammers often exploit moments of goodwill and try to capitalize on trusted brands and causes. By purchasing cookies directly from official sources, you can ensure your support goes directly to where it’s truly intended, to the next generation,” she added.
The BBB is offering some tips to help residents steer clear of potential scams.
First and foremost, BBB advises buying cookies from official sources. One easy way to do that is to use the cookie finder tool.
“Purchase directly from Girl Guides members, whether that’s a booth outside your grocery store, a neighbour’s child, or a community event. Avoid clicking on unsolicited online ads or private messages offering cookies.
“Be wary of unusual pricing, spelling or grammar errors, and sellers requesting e-transfers in advance. These are all signs something isn’t right,” BBB adds.
BBB also suggests avoiding using e-transfer to make payments for cookies and instead using cash or a card through official Girl Guide channels. BBB also advises paying only when you receive your cookies.
