BC Ferries cancels several sailings after vessel breaks down on water

It’s a rough Monday for BC Ferries as the company announced that one of its ships broke down during a sailing this morning, leading to further cancellations today.

According to BC Ferries, some sailings between Langdale (Sunshine Coast) and Horseshoe Bay (Vancouver) have been cancelled today due to “mechanical difficulty” with the Queen of Coquitlam’s pitch control.

The cancellations include:

  • 11:55 a.m. departing Horseshoe Bay
  • 1:05 p.m. departing Langdale
  • 2:10 p.m. departing Horseshoe Bay
  • 3:15 p.m. departing Langdale

The 4:20 p.m. sailing departing Horseshoe Bay and the 5:25 p.m. sailing departing from Langdale are at risk of cancellation.

Some folks took to social media to express their frustration with the current situation, as one X user pointed out that passengers on the broken-down vessel were “stranded in the middle of the bay.”

Another person asked if tug boats were on the way to get the ship to the dock.

BC Ferries says it will continue to investigate the issue, and the vessel is awaiting assistance from a tug to transport the ship to Horseshoe Bay.

“For those currently on board, the tug is expected to arrive to the vessel’s current location at approximately 2 p.m. The vessel will continue to communicate with passengers directly about the expected time of arrival into dock,” stated BC Ferries.

Those who have been impacted by the cancelled sailings will be contacted by the Customer Service Centre to let them know if another sailing can be arranged today, or if their booking must be cancelled.

Cancellations will be refunded.

BC Ferries noted that it is currently sourcing a complimentary passenger water taxi if regular scheduled service is cancelled.
