British Columbia health officials have announced 34 new test-positive coronavirus cases and another four deaths as a result of the virus.

During a press conference on Wednesday afternoon, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said the total number of recorded cases in the province now sits at 2,087.

Broken down by health region, Henry said there are cases in 811 Vancouver Coastal Health, 941 in Fraser Health, on 120 Vancouver Island, 169 in Interior Health, and 46 in Northern Health.

Out of the total number of cases, 89 people are in hospital, with 35 of those in intensive care. A total of 1,305 people “are now considered fully recovered,” said Henry.

Dr. Henry also gave updates on ongoing community outbreaks including investigations at United Poultry plant in Vancouver and its sister plant, Superior Poultry, in Coquitlam.

Currently, 42 workers have tested positive for COVID-19 at the United plant and 50 people have been infected at Superior.

Health officials also confirmed today two additional poultry plants near Chilliwack and Port Coquitlam where workers have tested positive.

Henry says all facilities are currently under investigation.

The number of cases at the Mission Medium Institution correctional facility remains at 120, with 108 inmates and 12 staff who have tested positive.

There are now four poultry plants in BC with active COVID-19 cases.

Earlier Wednesday, Premier John Horgan announced BC would be extending its state of emergency for more weeks.

“British Columbians have shown great leadership in our efforts to flatten the curve, but we can’t take our foot off the gas now,” he said during an afternoon press conference.

The state of emergency was officially extended until May 12 by Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General.

Horgan also noted that BC will be announcing its plans regarding the next steps to reopen some sectors of the province sometime next week.

“British Columbians have made great progress. We are the envy of the country,” said Horgan in a press conference.
