Health officials in British Columbia are scheduled to give a 3 pm media update on COVID-19 cases in the province on Wednesday.

The update was initially supposed to be a written briefing but this afternoon the BC Ministry of Health announced it would be a media dial-in event.

The announcement follows the five-day total of 2,206 new test-positive COVID-19 cases announced Tuesday.

There are currently 7,580 active cases of COVID-19 in the province. Additionally, there are 373 individuals currently hospitalized with the virus, 80 of whom are in intensive care. The remaining people are recovering at home in self-isolation.

A total of 9,414 people are under active public health monitoring as a result of identified exposure to known cases, and there were 74 new COVID-19-related deaths between December 25 to 29, for a total of 882 deaths in BC.

During Tuesday’s live briefing, Dr. Bonnie Henry said officials are carefully monitoring the transmission of the COVID-19 UK variant but that it is “not yet” circulating widely in the province.
