B.C. university crowned third best in Canada in new global ranking
Times Higher Education (THE) has released the 2027 edition of the World University Rankings, and several B.C. universities earned a spot on the prestigious list.
The ranking looks at over 2,000 research-intensive universities globally and assesses them based on 17 performance indicators, which are divided into five pillars covering their core missions of teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook.
Vancouver’s University of British Columbia (UBC) cracked the Top 50 in the world as the third-best university in Canada.
UBC celebrated its achievement on social media, announcing that it had moved up one rank to the 44th spot.

“THE has ranked the top 2,297 of the 22,000+ universities worldwide, and UBC ranks 44th overall and 29th among public universities,” said the institution.
“The rankings are based on research excellence, teaching, and international outlook – reinforcing UBC’s standing as one of the world’s leading research universities.”
Globally, the University of Oxford took the top spot with an overall score of 97.9, followed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Princeton University.

THE looks at several metrics, each scored out of 100, to determine where each university lands. The metrics include teaching, research environment, research quality, industry, and international outlook. UBC scored highly on some of these metrics, but not as highly in others.

- Teaching: 64.4
- Research Environment: 76.9
- Research Quality: 87.5
- Industry: 78
- International Outlook: 83.8
- Overall: 77.6

Other notable B.C. universities include the University of Victoria which landed in the 301-325 group, Simon Fraser University in the 351-375 group, and the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) in 1201-1400.
In total, 34 Canadian universities are featured in the 2027 Canada University Ranking, “showcasing the country’s strength in higher education.
“Overall, 2,297 universities from 118 countries and territories appeared in this year’s rankings, up from 2,191 last year,” added THE in its ranking, which can be found online.
