If you’re looking for a way to spice up your next birthday/corporate event/baby shower, you’ll soon be able to add “Axe Throwing Tournament” to the list thanks to Ontario-based business Bad Axe Throwing.

Bad Axe Throwing started in 2014 as a way of offering a “cutting-edge” alternative to the traditional outings like bowling or laser tag.

“We saw an opportunity to bring the sport of axe throwing indoors, and to try and replace a lot of recreational activities that have been outdated,” Chief Axe Thrower and Operations Manager Jesse Gutzman told Vancity Buzz. “It’s time for something a little edgier to give people a special occasion to celebrate.”

Bad Axe currently has 10 locations across Canada, with an 11th opening in Surrey Friday, May 13 with a three day open house. The facility offers games and instruction for individuals, small groups, and even organized two-and-a-half to three-hour-long tournaments.

“Say if you’ve got a birthday party and you’re looking up ideas to do in the city… axe throwing is a a great option,” he says. “What we’re going to be doing is bringing people in to celebrate whatever their special occasion is, and just letting them do it with axe throwing.”

With one-on-one lessons from Bad Axe instructors, Gutzman says the goal is have everyone throwing a bullseye within their first five throws.

“[It’s] extremely accessible,” he says. When people hear about it I don’t think many people assume they can just go out and do that, no problem, as easy as going to see a movie, or going to a bowling alley. It’s got that really exciting appeal, but we’ve made it so… as long as you can pick up an axe you can throw it.”

Bad Axe Throwing Surrey opens Friday, May 13 with a free three day open house, after which they will open up for reservations. For more information visit the Bad Axe Throwing website.
