B.C. to receive its fourth area code, the 236

Smartphone and wireless device usage has exploded in British Columbia, to the point that the Canadian Radio-Television Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) will be introducing a new phone area code to the province 2 years early.

There is no change in the existing phone numbers that use the 604 and 778 codes. The 236 area code will be used by telephone companies beginning on June 1, 2013 as more people and companies subscribe to new telephone services for their devices.

British Columbians only contended with the 604 and 250 area codes up until 2001, when the 778 and 10-digit dialing were introduced in Metro Vancouver (later introduced province-wide in 2008). The area code 672 has also been set aside for B.C.’s future telecom expansion.
