What’s a better way to kick off 2016 than with a dark comedy by Zach Braff, a musical based on an 80’s film, some sketch comedy, a Sondheim classic, a dance piece by a French-Algerian choreographer, or a comedic and misguided lovestory? Here are the six hottest arts shows in Vancouver this month.
The Rivals
Blackbird Theatre presents The Rivals as a part of their 10th anniversary season from December 28 to January 23 at the cultch. Written by Richard Brinsley Sheridan, this play is a combination of a love story and a comedy set in Edwardian England.

Company the Musical
United Players presents their first musical with Stephen Sondheim’s classic Company. The story centres around Bobby who is celebrating his 35th birthday with his group of coupled up friends who range from kooky to borderline insane.

Heathers the Musical
Based on the 1988 cult film Heathers, Gently with a Chainsaw Artists’ Collective presents the regional premiere of Heathers the Musical. Veronica is a spunky teenager just trying to make it through high school but she’s also friends with the popular and pathologically cruel group of girls, The Heathers. Enter a brooding bad boy with a taste for revenge and soon Veronica’s world is spiralling out of control.

Compagnie Nacera Belaza
French-Algerian choreographer Nacera Belaza presents a dance piece in collaboration with this year’s PuSh Festival that focuses on meditative minimalism. The choreography is inventive and simplistic with an undeniable sensuality that is sure to captivate Vancouver audiences.

All New People
Written by actor Zach Braff, All New People is a dark comedy presented by Ben Bilodeau Productions. The story centres around suicidal Charlie who meets a flurry of characters that inspire Charlie to take a wacky, hilarious, and introspective journey.

The 2016 Vancouver Sketch Comedy Festival
