Truck involved in B.C. overpass strike was transporting a house

Yet another overpass strike led to traffic havoc in Metro Vancouver on a major B.C. Highway on Wednesday morning.

According to BC Highway Patrol, the incident was reported just before 10 a.m. Wednesday morning on Highway 99 at the Blundell Road overpass. It adds that it’s causing “major traffic disruptions.”

Over an hour later, DriveBC was still cautioning residents to be careful due to ongoing traffic impacts.

BC Highway Patrol is currently working with Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement to investigate what happened.

“The vehicle involved was a commercial tractor-trailer carrying a load of lumber,” the BC Highway Patrol said.

Both the driver and the company he works for are being looked into.

“A pilot vehicle that was following the tractor-trailer was damaged when the over-height load of lumber fell off the trailer and hit the pilot vehicle’s windshield,” said Corporal Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol in a statement.

The BC Highway Patrol later added a correction that the load was actually a house.

“The tractor-trailer stopped at the scene. The driver and the company involved will be investigated.”

BC Highway Patrol adds that traffic in the area is “heavy,” and DriveBC has been providing additional updates, including the impacts to transit as the HOV/bus lane has been impacted.

The situation was cleared up around 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon.

This overpass strike is one of many that have occurred on major B.C. roadways over the last few years. A social media account that tracks overpass strikes suggests there have been seven so far this year in the Lower Mainland.
