Bad news in the world of movie streaming: Canadians will no longer be able to access their beloved American Netflix in the coming weeks thanks to a proxy server crackdown.

In a blog post issued by the vice president of content delivery architecture David Fullagar, Netflix announced they have new technology that will allow them to detect proxy servers, making sure people can only access titles available in their own country.
He said the goal is to enforce content licensing based on geographic location. The statement makes no mention of when Netflix will be able to offer the same content across all countries, and acknowledges they have “a ways to go” before that happens.
The change won’t affect Netflix users who aren’t using proxies. The streaming service is currently available in 190 countries.
A popular proxy server used by Netflix users is Hola, a Google Chrome extension that allows people to view content from a multitude of countries.
