Amazon plans to fight union certification for Metro Vancouver workers

Metro Vancouver Amazon workers saw a huge win after achieving union certification, but it doesn’t sound like the tech giant is all too happy about it.

Unifor announced that the B.C. Labour Relations Board (LRB) sided with it to award union certification to workers at an Amazon facility in Delta.

Unifor, which represents over 320,000 workers in “every major area of the economy,” said that the certification was “against very difficult odds, but they’ve slayed the giant.”

“This ruling sends a clear message to companies that bullying workers will only backfire in the end,” said Unifor National President Lana Panye.

Daily Hive obtained a statement from Amazon that makes it sound like it is not too pleased with the decision.

“This decision is wrong on the facts and the law — it goes against what our employees have said they want, and deprives them of their right to make an informed decision,” said Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel.

It also sounds like the tech giant will be working to overturn the decision.

“The board has decided to unilaterally overreach instead of giving our employees a chance to be heard, and we plan to appeal,” Nantel added.

We asked Amazon to expand on what it meant by that, and are waiting for a response.

Unifor adds that the LRB ruling “concludes that Amazon’s interference in the union drive was egregious enough to undermine the process and agreed with Unifor that certification of the union was the only reasonable remedy.”

“The new Unifor members in Delta can now begin the process of negotiating their first collective bargaining agreement.”

Unifor Western Regional Director Gavin McGarrigle believes that warehouse workers are better off with a union.

“Unifor will continue to provide support to workers at Amazon facilities across the country to improve working conditions and win fair pay,” he added.

The Unifor statement also says that its “Workers Unite” campaign has been successful at supporting workers at various Walmart facilities to form unions.

We’ve asked Unifor for a response to Amazon’s plan to appeal the certification and will update this story when we hear more.

The Unifor release comes at a notable time, as it’s the last day for Amazon Prime Day.
