Metro Vancouver residents will soon have another option when it comes to cooling off this summer.

… And likely the only option when it comes to outdoor swimming in the winter, as the new Credit Union Community Centre in Aldergrove will be open year-round.

The community centre, which is currently under construction but expected to open in June of this year, will feature an extensive outdoor swimming area, complete with water slides, a 50-person hot tub, a six-lane pool, a lazy river, and a wave pool complete with a large movie screen for pool-side flicks.

The pools will be located directly outside a 500+ seat arena, which boasts an NHL-sized rink and an indoor running track. The building is currently under construction as well.

All of the swimming amenities are located outdoors, though the six-lane pool, leisure pool, and hot tub are all covered by a wood canopy, allowing them to operate into the fall and winter months.

According to a release from the Township of Langley, the pool will be heated in part by solar panels and through excess energy produced from cooling the neighbouring arena’s ice.

“It is very exciting to see such strong community support for this new facility,” said Township of Langley Mayor Jack Froese, in the release.

“We continue to watch construction progress, and over the next several months the ACUCC will really begin to take shape. We will have a lot to celebrate when it opens to the public on the Canada Day long weekend.”

All told, the new centre and adjacent swimming pools will cost a total of $30 million dollars.
