It may soon get harder for airliners to turn a blind eye on carry-on items that are a little oversized.
Air Canada is tightening its rules by tagging carry-on baggage for its size and weight. Airline staff at check-in will be placing a red tag on all bags that meet the airline’s standards, in an effort to reduce wait times at security.
Standard fees will apply to for those with luggage that exceed regular size and weight. Passengers who get to security and hold bags that exceed weight or size will be given a special card to go back to check-in without having to wait in line once more.
The new rules will be first implemented at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport Starting May 25, though the rules are expected to expand around other Canadian airports in June.
Currently, passengers are allowed to carry two pieces with them on the plane: one standard article and one personal item. Examples of a standard article include a bag, carry-on or brief case. A personal article can be items like a laptop or camera bag.
Since last fall, Air Canada discontinued allowing one free checked-bag, and began charging $25 on every piece.
