Air Canada announced they will fire the two baggage handlers seen dropping passengers’ luggage from the top of a staircase into a baggage cart below in a recent viral video.

The video, shot by Vancouver’s Dwayne Stewart as he waited to fly home from Toronto’s Pearson International Airport, shows one of the workers dropping excess luggage into a bin more than six metres below.

While some might think it indefensible as to why certain passengers’ belongings were treated so carelessly, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers believes the blame lies with Air Canada.

The union, which represents the baggage handlers, claims Air Canada put too much pressure on the workers to make sure the plane was not delayed and that running down the stairs was not safe. They say the entire incident would likely have never happened had Air Canada also more strongly enforced their restrictions on carry-on baggage.

The airline has since apologized for the “totally unacceptable mishandling of our passengers’ baggage.”
