14 adorable cats in Vancouver who need to be adopted

Dec 20 2017, 2:14 am

National Cat Day is upon us, and to celebrate we’re looking at some of the amazing, cuddly, fuzzballs who need a home here in Vancouver.

The importance of adopting a cat – or any animal – can’t be underestimated, according to Vancouver Orphan Kitten Rescue Association President Karen Duncan.

“All of our shelters are full of animals that need homes,” she told Vancity Buzz.

Duncan said there aren’t many reputable breeders around, and finding them can be tough. She said VOKRA sees many purebred cats pass through their doors every year.

“We get in Himalayans, hairless, Siamese – we get everything.”

In fact, VOKRA gets about 1,800 cats per year, and all of them need a loving, caring home. Here are just 14 of the cats that need adopting from VOKRA (all cat bios taken from the VOKRA website):

Aimee

Aimee is a very sociable seal point Siamese. She loves to cuddle, and will lie down beside you, on your lap or legs, or on your back or chest – anywhere you make room for her. She is comfortable with being picked up, though don’t expect her to stay still for too long – she likes to wander off and explore, but will always come back to spend more time with you.

Catlyn (right)

Catlyn is a young mama who was pregnant when rescued. She was very scared and timid, but was lucky to be able to have her kittens in a safe and warm place. She has been a wonderful mother to her four kittens, and has come so far from that first week when she would hide in any spot she could find. Now she is trusting to the point of craving affection. She rubs against you asking to be pet, and purrs sweetly. She is still a little fearful, but all she needs is a little love and patience to bring her even further along to completely trust you.

Dougie

Dougie is a very sweet cat. He has made a lot of progress over the months that VOKRA has been fostering him. He is extremely cuddly when he wants to be, and he loves rubbing his head up against you in an affectionate way. He will nap right on top of you if you let him. He is also very playful, too. Dougie needs to find a loving, mature adopter who is experienced with cats. If you want a great kitty companion, Dougie is it.

Lydia and Loretta (Lydia pictured)

You’d better get used to the sound of purring if you adopt Lydia and her sister Loretta. These sweet girls are very content kitties, and will start purring as soon as you enter the room. Lydia will play hard to get until you gain her trust, but you will soon see that she is a chilled out kitty that craves attention and loves to play. She is best friends with her sister Loretta, and these two girls have so much fun chasing each other around and play fighting. They would be lost without each other.

Nala and Rainbow

Nala and Rainbow are special VOKRA kitties who were rescued together. They love playing with the cat dancer and laser pointer, eating treats, and being brushed. They are also huge fans of horizontal scratch posts and catnip. They enjoy sleeping together in the same bed, couch, or in front of the window. If these kitties sound suitable for your lifestyle, please consider giving Nala and Rainbow their forever home. They will be forever grateful, and you will hear all the purring your heart desires!. You’ll also see amazing acrobatic performances when playing the cat dancer. Videos of playtime are available upon request. Nala and Rainbow must be adopted together.

Pinot

Pinot is an all around great kitty. As well as being a stunning cat with his black smoke with white undercoat colouring and green eyes, he is both playful and cuddly. Although he can seem shy at first, he gets comfortable quickly. Don’t be surprised if he comes to cuddle in bed with you under the covers as soon as you adopt him.

Shaemus (and Lowki – not pictured)

Shaemus is an absolutely stunning gentleman. Loving, sweet and affectionate, no one would ever guess that this dashing guy was once a feral street cat. Life on the streets wasn’t great for Shae and when he was rescued by VOKRA he was an emaciated, matted mess. With lots of love, patience and treatment, Shae has blossomed into one of the most gentle and kind souls. This is clear in his treatment of Lowki, his adopted son. The dynamic duo love to chase each other around, play with anything on a string and most entertaining of all- catch cat nip bubbles! They are also very snuggly, love/seek human affection and like to curl up with you on the sofa to watch TV or help you work. Shae and Lowki are looking for a home together where they can be around adults only, can build a loving and trusting relationship with their new family and be loved and brushed for ever more.

Simon Says

This affectionate gentleman is the perfect companion kitty. As an older fella, Simon is over the years of knocking things off shelves and causing other chaos, and just wants to hang out with you. He’s always looking for a good head scratch – he adores head scratches – and never fails to come say goodnight before bed. If you’re looking for a laid-back, snuggly, handsome feline, Simon’s your guy. Come meet this total sweetheart.

Tammy

Tammy is a wonderful companion. She is very gentle, and loves to sit on your lap while you read or watch tv. She also likes to sleep on your bed, and she adores watching birds from the window.  A gentle cat, she likes it when you talk to her in a soft voice. She also enjoys having her beautiful coat brushed. She would love a quiet home with a patient adopte. Once she gets to know you, she will be your best and forever friend.

Zoey (and Martin – not pictured)

Zoey is a seven-year-old large orange and white kitty who is thrilled to just lay on the couch all day looking gorgeous. She loves to be brushed and her favourite activity is to spread out on a couch pillow and catnap. Zoey and Martin are a bonded pair and must be adopted together, but they couldn’t be more different. The two of them love each other, but because they’re so different, they sometimes bicker like an old married couple. They are a great pair and will transition nicely into their new forever home.
