Intracorp’s 46-storey MetroPlace fulfills the City of Burnaby’s vision for new direction in urban design.

The City of Burnaby has given final approval to a new design for town centre development that will become the “downtown heart” of Metrotown. MetroPlace, at Beresford Street and Telford Avenue across from the Metrotown SkyTrain station, combines increased density in the form of a tower rising from a pedestrian-oriented high street with Robson-style shopping and activity rather than the indoor malls more typical of the area.

“This is a shared vision, but more than anything it was Burnaby’s vision for Beresford Street and for our site,” says Maurice Pez, Intracorp’s senior vice-president, development. “It’s going to make an exciting addition to Burnaby’s Metrotown Centre plan.”

Because the site is located at a town centre and is directly across from the SkyTrain station, Burnaby saw it as an ideal location for increased density. Intracorp, with its previous experience in urban development, was the ideal partner for a Vancouver-style tower with street-oriented rowhomes at the base. Beresford Street, with wide boulevards on either side, public art, landscaping and outdoor seating, will become the new heart of Burnaby’s Metrotown community as well as an important pedestrian route.

MetroPlace was designed by Busby Perkins + Will to be an instantly recognizable landmark with a dramatic lit glass “lantern” at the north east corner of the tower, rising 48 stories above the street. At the base on Beresford, there will be a three-storey commercial and community space with a landscaped green roof. Townhomes will line Telford and the adjoining Mews with stacked flats above them and roof terraces with outdoor fireplaces. The Telford entrance to the dramatic transparent lobby, glazed on three sides, is over a raised walkway with a water feature on either side. To the west, the lobby opens onto a landscaped courtyard, and to the south, onto an enclosed Zen garden.

The 342 homes combine affordability with high-end specifications such as Eggersman cabinets from Germany. One-bedroom homes start in the $250,000s, two-bedrooms in the $420,000s. Sizes range from 493 square feet for one bedroom, one bath, to 946 for two bedrooms, two bathrooms and den. Amenities include the green roof over the commercial area, outdoor barbecues, a two-storey fitness studio, the Zen garden and 360-degree views along with easy access to transit and shopping.
