8 Ways To Wear A Fall Hat

Dec 19 2017, 8:12 pm

Hats can get a bad rap, but there is no reason to write them off for fear of being lumped into the fedora wearing community.  Think of a hat as a finishing touch to an outfit, instead of a standout accessory.

The only firm hat rule is to avoid the trilby (that’s the one everyone is always mistaking for a fedora), which has gotten a reputation for being the favourite of the club going crowd.  If you are looking to venture into the world of the hat, try a wide brim felt or a unique baseball style, both of which are androgynous.

If you’re stuck trying to figure out what hat size works for your hairstyle and face shape, there are a number of excellent hat shops, including Yaletown’s Goorin Bros and the Granville Island Hat Shop.  Take a friend along; trying on hats can be a fun affair, especially when the costume hats come out!  See the slideshow below for a variety of hats with different clothing styles for inspiration.

8 Ways To Wear A Fall Hat

Hats are one of my favourite fall accessories, and they’re not just to be worn in formal occasions or because the sun is bright.

  • With Jewel Tones

Bright tops (and maybe even hair) are a great way to easily add creativity to your daily wardrobe. Think of the hat to glue the look together.

  • With Colourful Hair

Say good-bye to summertime pastels, and swap for some richer shades.  These spunky hair colours stand out brilliantly against a wider brim black hat!

  • Western Style

If you fancy yourself a fan of the Western style, tie a ribbon around the neck of your favourite button up and add a wide lapel velvet blazer.

  • Go Neutral

One of my favourite ways to dress up a hat is to don thematic layers.  A great way to go from summer to fall is to get yourself in head to toe grey.

  • With Formalwear

You don’t have to wear a suit and a tie to look right in a hat.  Choose your best dress, and top off with your favourite headgear!

  • Against Patterns

    By Vancity Buzz

Choose a coloured hat and a striped sweater, or another top with a pattern that has a flair for the visual.

  • All Black Everything

    By Vancity Buzz

Start from the hat and head all the way down to footwear… as long as everything is black, that is.

  • With Leather Accents

Leather cuffs, collars, bags and boots are a great way to keep your look edgy.  Wear with a wide brim hat for extra drama!
