8 people hospitalized after massive tree falls on Sea to Sky Highway (VIDEOS)
Eight people are in hospital after a massive tree fell onto the Sea to Sky highway, causing chaos on the road.
Southbound traffic has reopened since the incident occurred earlier this evening, but northbound traffic remains single lane at Horseahoe Bay Road.
Witness Ziv Schierau says he was driving home to Port Moody from a Whistler ski vacation when he was stopped on Highway 99 near Horseshoe Bay at around 6pm.
“It was a fallen tree from up above the highway that literally slid on its side all of the way down, onto the highway, through the barricade, crashing through concrete.”
Those taken to hospital are in stable condition, but he says a pet was not so lucky.
“Unfortunately there were two dogs that were not as fortunate. One of them had actually run down the highway and was hit by a car.”
It’s believed drivers slammed on their breaks in an effort to avoid the tree, causing a pile up.
The highway was shut down for several hours.
