70+ Vancouver pubs are holding Whitecaps watch parties this month
At long last, live sports are ready to return, Vancouver.
The Vancouver Whitecaps will become the first professional team in the city to return to play during the pandemic next week.
The MLS is Back tournament kicks off tonight, but the Whitecaps will have to wait until Wednesday, July 15, for their opener against the San Jose Earthquakes.
All matches will take place at Disney World’s ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, without fans in attendance. Back home in Vancouver, supporters will have the opportunity to enjoy watch parties at more than 70 local pubs, the Whitecaps announced on Wednesday.
“All establishments will be abiding by physical distancing and health regulations,” the team said in a media release. “Fans are encouraged to call ahead as space may be limited.”
Dubbed “Watch it Live,” the Whitecaps say this initiative supports Tourism Vancouver’s #VancouverComeBack program to help rejuvenate the city and its businesses.
“We have been thrilled to connect the Vancouver Whitecaps FC viewing party opportunity to our restaurant, hotel and hospitality businesses,” said Candice Gibson, marketing manager for Tourism Vancouver. “We all have a role to play in stimulating business and encouraging people to be part of #VancouverComeBack. What better way than through our beloved sports teams.”
All participating pubs will broadcast every Whitecaps match for the duration of the tournament. The Whitecaps recommend confirming with each location that they will have the sound of the game on.
The Whitecaps have two group stage matches scheduled, both beginning at 7:30 pm PT:
- Wednesday, July 15: Whitecaps FC vs San Jose Earthquakes
- Monday, July 20: Whitecaps FC vs Seattle Sounders FC
A total of 16 teams will advance to the knockout stage, which begins on July 25. That’s when the tournament turns to a single match elimination format, until a champion is crowned on August 11.
