Dec 19 2017, 9:17 pm

A seven-year-old girl died in the Lions Bay area of Howe Sound this morning when a rockslide cascaded on top of her at a hiking trail.

The girl was part of a local hiking club that included family members and friends. At the time, they were on a trail along Lonetree Creek at Unnecessary Mountain.

At approximately 10 a.m., when the group stopped to take photographs, a rockslide cascaded into the creek and the girl was instantly buried under a large pile of rocks.

The group made an attempt to free the girl from the debris, but they were unsuccessful. Paramedics as well as search and rescue crews from both the ground and air scrambled to the scene of the accident.

However, while rescuers freed her from the debris and performed CPR , she was pronounced dead at the scene.

No other information or the identity of the victim has been provided. Heavy rain over the last few days and weeks likely caused the rocks to become loose.
