7 things to do in Vancouver today: Wednesday, July 5

The first hump day of July is here and it’s packed with exciting events around the city! From Starlight Theatre to a Legend of Zelda escape experience, here are our seven things to do today in Vancouver.

Starlight Theatre at Lansdowne Centre

  • What: Take a trip back to the days of poodle-skirts, greased hair, and doo wop music – the Drive-In Movie Series returns to Lansdowne Centre for third year. Enjoy classic, family-friendly, and even some of the latest hits on an outdoor screen. Take a drive and cuddle up, or bring a blanket and lawn chair and settle in. Parking is on a first-come first-served basis (first 200 vehicles), with movie audio will be broadcast over FM radio. And keep in mind that this is a family-friendly event, so smoking and alcohol are strictly prohibited.
  • When: Every Wednesday from July 5 to August 30

Daniel Lanois

  • What: Daniel Lanois is one of the finest sonic experimenters of recent years, and is on tour in support of his album Goodbye To Language, constructed entirely from the sounds of the pedal steel guitar and a sense of sonic futurism.

Baba Brinkman’s Rap Guide to Consciousness

  • What: Baba Brinkman’s new hip-hop theatre show is all about the neuroscience of consciousness. See it in Vancouver before it goes to the Edinburgh Fringe in August.  This event also features a performance of “Off the Top” with Dr. Heather Berlin (cognitive neuroscientist, TV host, and Baba’s wife), which is also going to Edinburgh.

Flamenco, Tango & Wine IN ONE NIGHT

  • What: Latincouver proudly presents a collaboration of Flamenco, Tango & Wine in one night. It promises to be an evening of raw, powerful award-winning flamenco and tango dance in an intimate setting at the Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre.

Meet and Greet with Hannah Shaw & Andrew Marttila

Daniel Chai / Daily Hive

  • What: Hannah Shaw the Kitten Lady, and renowned pet photographer, Andrew Marttila of The Great Went Pet Photography, are making their Canadian debut here in Vancouver. Copies of Shop Cats of New York will be available for book signing and purchase. All proceeds go to the BC SPCA (BCSPCA). Ticket price includes entry for one hour. Wine and refreshments will be available for purchase.

Defenders of the Triforce: Vancouver

  • What: This game is a rare chance to enter a world inspired by The Legend of Zelda video game series. You will find yourself transported to the land of Hyrule, where the Triforce has fallen into evil hands. You must form a team and stop darkness from taking over the realm. Work with your teammates to explore the area, find hidden clues and solve puzzles. You have only 60 minutes to find the final answer and escape from the story’s situation.

Problem Child by George F. Walker

  • What: R.J. and Denise, two dysfunctional parents from the wrong side of the tracks, are trying to get their baby out of the system and back in their arms. But they have to get around Helen, the by-the-book social worker who isn’t budging. With the help of Phillie, the drunken motel employee, how far will Denise and R.J. go to reunite their family?
