More details have emerged about the multi-family and mixed-use development that will take over the current site of REVS bowling alley and entertainment site in Burnaby.

According to a city report, the transit-oriented development planned for 5502 Lougheed Highway will be made up of a trio of towers, with the tallest one being proposed at 60 storeys. The other two buildings could be up to 54 and 46 storeys tall.

A two-storey amenity building is also being considered for the southwest corner of the site.

The site applicant, Keltic Canada Development, finalized the deal to acquire the long-time Metro Vancouver bowling and recreation destination in March 2023.

In a previous interview with Daily Hive Urbanized, Julian Ward, Keltic’s vice president of development, estimated that buildings could range between 35 storeys and 55 storeys, but it appears that the company is now aiming for higher.

In total, the development will contain 1,667 units, with 1,190 of those being market strata units. Another 242  would be market rental spaces, and 232 are proposed as non-market rental spaces 20% below the CMHC median. Commercial space will front Lougheed Highway.

Vehicles would access the site primarily along the southeast corner of the site from Goring Street. A secondary single-point vehicle exit could be built off Lougheed Highway.

The report also includes proposed details for a minor bylaw amendment to the Brentwood Town Center Plan to allow for commercial space along Lougheed Highway, “which, if approved, would take effect upon Council granting Second Reading to the Rezoning,” stated the report.

The documents also highlight a “key design change” from the plan’s previous proposal to construct a plaza at the northwest corner of the site to create a “pedestrian-oriented gateway into the site fronting Lougheed Highway.”

The plaza would be located near the commercial space, public seating, a kids’ play area, public art, and a streamside pathway.

The proposal notes that 946 spaces will be dedicated to strata residential parking, and 111 are designated for market residential spots. All of these spaces will be 100% EV-ready.

There will be 74 visitor parking slots and 109 rental residential spots. One space per 55m2 is dedicated to commercial parking but can shared as residential visitor parking.

There will be 3,342 secured residential bike parking spaces and 334 visitor bike spots.

The report will be presented at Tuesday night’s council meeting, with the recommendation that the suggested rezoning bylaw be brought forward for the first and second reading at a future date.

REVS Burnaby is still open to the public.

The existing bowling alley building was first constructed in 1962, and it was originally known as Brentwood Lanes before a change in ownership that brought it under the REVS brand.

According to REVS’ website, its Burnaby location is Western Canada’s largest 10-pin bowling centre with 48 lanes, capable of accommodating up to 300 people in one shift. In addition to the bowling lanes, dining areas, and other ancillary spaces, the 64,000 sq ft building also has a fitness gym aimed to help bowlers strength train. REVS also has one location in Maple Ridge and another in Windsor, Ontario.

Daily Hive Urbanized reached out to REVS about when it will be closing to the public but did not hear back before the deadline.
