6-Flick-Picks: New movies for May

Dec 19 2017, 11:02 pm

May is when we start seeing some of the blockbusters start to roll out. 6-Flick-Picks gives you a few movies that might peak your interest this month.

Avengers: Age of Ultron

Official Synopsis: When Tony Stark jump starts a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, are put to the ultimate test as they battle to save the planet from destruction at the hands of the villainous Ultron.

Rated PG-13 – For superhero nerdgasm

There has been a lot of anticipation for this film since 2012s mega hit The Avengers. Marvel has done a fantastic job in regards to continuity between all of it’s films so having the likes of Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America and the rest of the team together again should make for a fun night out at the movies.

 Mad Max: Fury Road

Official Synopsis: An apocalyptic story set in the furthest reaches of our planet, in a stark desert landscape where humanity is broken, and almost everyone is crazed fighting for the necessities of life. Within this world exist two rebels on the run who just might be able to restore order. There’s Max, a man of action and a man of few words, who seeks peace of mind following the loss of his wife and child in the aftermath of the chaos. And Furiosa, a woman of action and a woman who believes her path to survival may be achieved if she can make it across the desert back to her childhood homeland.

Rated R – For yes please

George Miller gets behind the camera once again to give us another high octane Mad Max film. It’s hard to believe that there hasn’t been another Max film since 1985. Instead of Mel Gibson playing the iconic Max Rockatasnky, we get Tom Hardy continuing on with the Road Warrior’s story. This is on my list of the most highly anticipated films of 2015 and judging by the trailer this looks like this could be a blast.

Good Kill

Good Kill

Official Synopsis: In the shadowy world of drone warfare, combat unfolds like a video game-only with real lives at stake. After six tours of duty, Air Force pilot Tom Egan (Ethan Hawke) yearns to get back into the cockpit of a real plane, but he now fights theTaliban from an air-conditioned box in the Las Vegas desert. When he and his crew start taking orders directly from the CIA, and the stakes are raised, Egan’s nerves-and his relationship with his wife (January Jones)-begin to unravel. (C) IFC Films

Rated R – For real life video games

This film looks fantastic and behind it is a message about how warfare has changed in the 21st-century. Drone strikes have been controversial and this story portrays the psychological toll drone pilots endure when targeting enemies from half a world away. It stars Ethan Hawke and Mad Men’s January Jones. It’s also directed by Andrew Niccol who gave us Gattaca and Lord of War. This looks like one of the best dramas of the month.

Official Synopsis: Bound by a shared destiny, former boy-genius Frank (George Clooney), jaded by disillusionment, and Casey (Britt Robertson), a bright, optimistic teen bursting with scientific curiosity, embark on a danger-filled mission to unearth the secrets of an enigmatic place somewhere in time and space known only as “Tomorrowland.” What they must do there changes the world-and them-forever. (C) Walt Disney

Rated PG – For pack up the mini van the kids are going to a movie

This was a fairly big budget movie that was filmed in Vancouver so right off the hop we will see many local places disguised as something else. I’m sure at some point BC Place or the Vancouver Public Library will appear as some sort of futuristic space station. Whatever the case, this film has a ton of potential and with two-time Oscar winner Brad Bird directing it, there is a chance that this could be worth checking out.

Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck

Official Synopsis: Kurt Cobain, lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter of Nirvana, remains an icon 20 years after his death. Here, we take a journey through Cobain’s life and his career with Nirvana through the lens of his home movies, recordings, artwork, photography, and journals.

Unrated – For what does teen spirit actually smell like?

Early reviews have said that this is one of the best documentaries of the year and the most definitive doc on the late musician. If you were a fan of Cobain and Nirvana than you will definitely want to check this film out at The Rio theatre on May 16. Doors open at 6 p.m., film starts at 7 p.m. and at 9:45 p.m. there will be a concert where many local bands will be paying homage to the ’90s grunge band Nirvana. *Additional screenings of the documentary May 17 to 20 without the concert. This is a must see.

Official Synopsis: Bloodline is a dramatic thriller that explores the demons lurking beneath the surface of a contemporary American family. The Rayburns are hard-working pillars of their Florida Keys community. But when the black sheep son comes home for the 45th anniversary of his parents’ hotel, he threatens to expose the Rayburns’ dark secrets and shameful past, pushing his siblings to the limits of family loyalty.

Rated TV-MA – For messed up family issues

Last month I suggested Daredevil and it did not disappoint. Although this was released back in March, this month my pick is another Netflix original called Bloodline. It stars Friday Night Light’s Kyle Chandler who I think is a fantastic actor. This is definitely a show you can binge watch. The mystery unravels over each episode and as you move along the more you learn about the family. Everything comes together in what is a pretty crazy final episode. This is a definite must watch.
