This month we’ll be inundated with leprechauns and Easter bunnies, but there are a few films coming up in March that might be worth shoving into your eyeballs.
It’s not a bad little month, as far as film is concerned. I’m already predicting that the R-rated Deadpool will finally meet its box office match, as it will be destroyed by a cute and adorable little bunny. There’s irony in there somewhere. But that could be short lived when Batman comes swooping in.
We also have a much anticipated Netflix release, and a couple of science fiction flicks that look intense. Here are six films to check out for the month of March.
Zootopia
Official Synopsis: From the largest elephant to the smallest shrew, the city of Zootopia is a mammal metropolis where various animals live and thrive. When Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) becomes the first rabbit to join the police force, she quickly learns how tough it is to enforce the law. Determined to prove herself, Judy jumps at the opportunity to solve a mysterious case. Unfortunately, that means working with Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman), a wily fox who makes her job even harder.

Why you should check it out: Always good to include a quality family film on my list. Zootopia is directed by Byron Howard (Bolt and Tangled) and Rich Moore (Wreck-It Ralph), and it’s been receiving outstanding reviews. Not only will kids love it, but it has a lot to offer for adults too. Considered to be an instant Disney classic, it’s the perfect film for a family date night at the movie theatre. 10 Cloverfield Lane
Official Synopsis: A woman (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) discovers the horrifying truth about the outside world while living in an underground shelter with two men (John Goodman, John Gallagher Jr.).
[youtube id=”22MWVOks2uw”]
Why you should check it out: While J.J. Abrams was filming a little independent film called Star Wars: The Force Awakens, he secretly had director Dan Trachtenberg shoot 10 Cloverfield Lane, which is supposedly a “blood relative” and not necessarily a true sequel to 2008’s Cloverfield. If you were a fan of the original, there is no doubt that you’re stoked for this one. Not much is known about the plot, but the film certainly looks intense, and anything with John Goodman can’t be bad right?

Midnight Special
Official Synopsis: The government and a group of religious extremists pursue a man (Michael Shannon) and his son (Jaeden Lieberher), a young boy who possesses special powers.

Why you should check it out: Directed by Jeff Nichols who brought us Mud, Midnight Special has that whole Close Encounters of the Third Kind feel to it. There’s already some early buzz on this film, and it has a pretty solid cast with the likes of Michael Shannon, Adam Driver, Kirsten Dunst, and Joel Edgerton all featuring. If you’re a fan of the science fiction genre, go and check this out.

Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice
Official Synopsis: Fearing the actions of Superman are left unchecked, Batman takes on Superman, while the world wrestles with what kind of a hero it really needs. With Batman and Superman fighting each other, a new threat, Doomsday, is created by Lex Luthor. It’s up to Superman and Batman to set aside their differences along with Wonder Woman to stop Lex Luthor and Doomsday from destroying Metropolis.

Why you should check this out: Because this film has been jammed down our throats for well over a year now, it’s time to see if the hype matches the quality. There are many skeptics, and a maybe some glimmer of hope that director Zack Snyder gets this right. This is one of the most highly-anticipated films of the year but whatever you think of the trailers, or Ben Affleck, go and give this one a try and make up your own mind.

My Big Fat Wedding 2
Official Synopsis: The Portokalos family gathers for a massive wedding after Toula’s (Nia Vardalos) parents learn that they were never legally married.
[youtube id=”JQ-1Ts3BChM”]
Why you should check it out: My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 is the long-awaited follow-up to the highest-grossing romantic comedy of all time. Back in 2002, My Big Fat Greek Wedding was a massive hit, now 14 years later we get a sequel. So far sequels to films that were made over a decade ago haven’t been doing very well, so it will be interesting to see if director Kirk Jones can bring back the magic of the original. Expect this one to do well at the box office and make this your date night movie for the month of March.

Netflix/VOD Pick:
Daredevil Season 2
Official Synopsis: The second season of the American web television series Daredevil, based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name, follows Matt Murdock / Daredevil, a blind lawyer-by-day who fights crime at night, crossing paths with the deadly Frank Castle / Punisher and seeing the return of an old girlfriend–Elektra Natchios.

Why you should check this out: Season one of Daredevil was a massive hit for Netflix and one of the best comic book adaptations we’ve seen. Daredevil never really got the proper movie when Ben Affleck starred back in 2002, and the same can probably be said for The Punisher films. Now we get both comic book heroes in the same damn show! Add in some Elektra and this part of the Marvel Universe is really starting to heat up. Bring on season two!
